YOUR LINKEDIN CHECKLIST

22 May 2018

With over 500 million users, LinkedIn has secured itself as the go-to place for job seekers, recruiters and companies looking to find their next hire online. As the number one business-focused social media network in the world, there’s no doubt that you need to know how to put your best foot forward online.

IS YOUR PROFILE UP TO DATE?

Your LinkedIn profile should act as your online CV. It doesn’t need to be as detailed, but you should clearly list your job title, what sector you work in and bullet point your day to day roles. Just like a CV, it’s important to list the dates you worked at each company so there are no gaps between jobs. Whenever you change jobs or get promoted, add it onto your LinkedIn profile. This is also a great way to promote yourself as it’ll notify your connections of your milestones.

WHAT IS YOUR PROFILE PICTURE?

A professional profile picture will go a long way on your LinkedIn profile, so no selfies please! It doesn’t have to be a professional photo, just get a friend or family member to take a good picture for you. Try taking your headshot in front of a white background with good lighting and keep it regularly updated.

LOOKING FOR A NEW ROLE?

LinkedIn is a great place to find a new role without having to do too much work. Did you know that you can change your status to ‘looking for new opportunities’ without anyone other than a recruiter knowing? This means recruiters and companies will know you’re happy to receive information on jobs that are suited to your experience, but your current employer won’t be able to see! Keeping your experience up-to-date will help recruiters filter relevant jobs for you too.

WHO ARE YOU FOLLOWING?

You might not have given it much thought, but the companies you follow and the content you like, share and comment on says a lot about you. Be mindful of what you post on LinkedIn, and remember, you don’t need to comment, share or like everything. Interacting with fewer but more relevant stories will serve you better.
