How to Progress to Success: Top Tips from the Pros

25 April 2018

Last night we hosted our first event of 2018, Progress to Success, which aimed to give junior PRs tips on how to progress up the PR and comms ladder. We were lucky enough to have John Craske, PR and Social Media Manager from Freeview and Nick Braund, Head of Technology from The PHA Group as guest speakers who shared with us their pearls of wisdom for a successful career.

We didn’t think it was fair to keep it all to ourselves, so we’ve gathered their top tips for you below!

BE PASSIONATE

It’s only once you do what you love that you will start to make a real positive difference to the company you are working for. If you have to fake your enthusiasm for something, it’s time to move onto to something new.

REJECTION IS OKAY

We all know how stressful job hunting can be, but rejection can be a good thing. Not every job will be perfect for you but there is a role for everyone, so you have to just keep your head high and keep on looking. It’s important that you feel you have the same values as the company you work for and that they’re able to give you what you want in terms of career progression and support.

BE KNOWN FOR SOMETHING

Once you love what you do, you’ll become an expert in it quicker than you think and it’s then that you’ll be known for something. It’s a great feeling when someone comes to you because they trust your input and expertise.

SAY NO

It can often seem like you have to say ‘yes’ to everything your company asks of you, but realistically this will result in spreading yourself too thin. You’re remembered for the work you do, so it’s better to do less and it be amazing than doing more and it be average. If you don’t think you are able to do what they’re asking to the best of your ability then say ‘no’.

LOG YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS

Not only does this help you create a really comprehensive CV but it also acts as a reminder of how well you’re doing. No one should care more about you career than you.

ASK QUESTIONS

It’s not annoying and you shouldn’t be ashamed of asking questions. Chances are someone else in the office is thinking the same thing but was too scared to ask! The people around you have so much useful information to share and the only way that will happen is if you ask them questions.

Thank you to everyone who attended our ‘Progress to Success’ event last night! It was lovely to see so many familiar faces and we hope you learnt lots of useful tips for the future.
