With over 2 billion people worldwide using social media on a day-to-day basis, it is no surprise that businesses use social media to advertise live roles, enabling them to reach a wider audience and giving job seekers a modern-day helping hand in finding a new job. This means that recruitment agencies and your future employers will most likely look at your online profiles too; so knowing how to present yourself online is key!

Here are our 3 top tips:

Be your best self

You should aim to present yourself online in the same way you would present yourself for an interview; setting the right image is essential. This doesn’t mean you have to completely hide or change who you are, it just means that you need to present the best version of yourself and find a balance. Make sure to delete or privatise anything you wouldn’t want future employers to see in order to avoid giving the wrong impression. You don’t want an old and embarrassing picture ruining your chance to land your dream role!

Be active

Being active on social media is a great way to give future employers a glimpse of your personality, but make sure what you’re posting is relevant; you don’t need to share or comment on everything! Future employers may use your social channels such as Facebook, Instagram or Twitter to establish the kind of person you are in a way a CV or LinkedIn profile won’t reflect, so make sure you’re posting wisely. As for LinkedIn, make sure to keep your profile up-to-date with employment history; think of your profile as your online CV!

Be mindful

It’s important to remain respectful on your social media platforms in order to show good character; manners cost nothing! It can be easy to get caught up in a social media bubble, but make sure to remain mindful when posting content as you never know who could be reading. Throughout the PR & Communications industry, you will come across a number of different brands, companies and clients, so be aware of any throw away comments you make; you never know if your paths will cross in the future!
