JUNIOR SALARIES

5 December 2017

With our 2017 Salary Survey now closed, we thought it would be beneficial to take a look at what our 2016 Salary Survey found when it came to Junior Salaries, and in general, we saw an increase across the board.

Junior salaries in consumer agencies are typically lower than those found in other sectors (particularly corporate and financial), but in 2016 we saw a rise in the average Account Executive salary from £20,000 in 2015 to £22,000. In-house consumer salaries have always fared slightly better than their agency counterparts, and this was no different in 2016, with Communications or PR Assistants achieving £23,000, up £1,000 from 2015.

Corporate communications professionals are amongst the best paid throughout the industry, with starting salaries rarely dropping below £20,000. In 2016 the average Senior Account Executive salary has risen from £26,000 to £28,000 in an agency. Similarly, professionals working in-house in corporate communications are receiving more generous base salaries, with £28,000 now being the average for a Communications Assistant. This suggests that companies are keen to hire and retain their talent, in a period when the candidate is able to pick and choose their next career move.

Public affairs is an area that has seen a boost as a result of the Brexit result, which has caused a rise in requirements for candidates with sound political knowledge and cross-party networks. Account Executives in agencies can expect generous starting salaries of up to £27,000, with the average salary for an Account Executive role being £23,000. It therefore comes as no surprise that an in-house average salary for a Public Affairs Assistant fairs even better at £25,000.

In the first half of 2016, internal communications was an area in which we saw a vast amount of growth, as companies put more investment into employee engagement and bolstered their internal communications teams. Whilst salaries are not overly generous, Assistants can earn an average of £21,500 and Executive levels earn on average £28,000.
